I was. Turns out I'm an idiot and you have to have the phone plugged into the USB port while the car is running for Android Auto to work. It's best to wait until the headunit had completely booted up, about 30 seconds, before plugging the phone in. I've found that plugging it in before starting the car has caused it to not work at all

From the home screen or app drawer, tap on the Settings menu on your handset. Tap on About phone > Build Number > Quickly tap 7 times on the Build number. The Developer Options menu will be activated. Now, Go back to the Settings menu again > Tap on Developer Options next to the About Phone.
